This Establishment Census was conducted in 2011.

In 2011, there were 123,562 operating establishments in Rwanda. Their geographic distribution is such that 23.6 percent in Kigali City, 19.4 percent in Southern province, 20.9 percent in Western province, 17.9 percent in Northern Province and 18.3 percent in Eastern province. Generally, districts in Kigali city have much larger numbers of functional establishments compared with districts of other provinces

The highest increase was observed for business-oriented establishments involved in the following economic activities: electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, water supply, sewage, waste management and remediation activities, arts, entertainment and ix recreation, education, real estate activities, information and communication.

Slightly more than a half of the establishments in Rwanda (53.5 percent) follow the household sector, Private sector accounts for about 41.0 percent of all operating establishments. The rest of establishments are scattered over the remaining economic sector categories.
