Rwanda's Labor Force Participation Continues to Grow in 2024
The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) released the 2024 Annual Labor Force Survey Report, revealing steady growth in labor force participation. The report highlights key labor market trends, including an increasing labour force participation and a decline in the population outside the labor force.
According to the findings, Rwanda's working-age population (16 years and above) was estimated at approximately 8.3 million in 2024. Out of this population, around 4.4 million were employed, while 780,000 were unemployed. The remaining 3.1 million individuals were classified as being outside the labor force (such as students, homemakers, retired individuals, or discouraged jobseekers). Overall, around 5.2 million people were either employed or actively looking for job.
The labor force participation rate which represents the percentage of working-age population engaged in the labor market was 62.9% in 2024, up from 59.3% in 2023. At the same time, the number of people outside the labor force decreased from 40.7% in 2023 to 37.1% in 2024.
However, the report also highlights the labour force participation rate which has consistently been higher among males than females population, The gender gap in labour force participation rate stood at approximately 15.5 percentage points in 2024 remaining relatively stable as compared to the situation in 2023, highlighting the need for continued efforts to enhance gender inclusivity in the workforce.
The findings from the 2024 Labor Force Survey provide essential insights for policymakers, labor market analysts, and stakeholders working to enhance employment opportunities and create more job opportunities in Rwanda.
