Duties and responsibilities:
The Economic Statistics (ES) unit is mandated to collect data and produce statistics and information in various economic areas, including: Industrial (manufacturing, mining and quarrying) and agricultural statistics; trade (domestic and international trade), infrastructure as well as services sectors; price Statistics (CPI and PPI) and National Accounts ( Input Output table and annual bench marking, Quarterly national accounts, Balance of payments, Flow of funds accounts). In addition, the Department is in charge of establishing and maintaining a business registry.
To accomplish its mission, the Economic Statistics Department is headed by a director and is organized into five sections with the following staff:

Director (a.i):

Mr. SIBOMANA Oscar is the acting Director of Economic Statistics Unit since July 2024 up to date.
SIBOMANA has been in the field of statistical production for more than 19 years. From 2019 up to June 2024, he was team leader in charge of industry and infrastructure statistics. He compiled the index of industrial production (IIP). He participated in various surveys, such as the Integrated Business Enterprises Surveys (IBES) and Producer Price Index surveys.
From 2015 up to 2018, he was acting Director of Economic statistics unit. During this period, he coordinated all activities of Economic Statistics Unit.
He coordinated the activities of producing various economic indicators; such Gross Domestic Product (GDP), trade statistics, Consumer Price Indices (CPI), Producer Price Indices (PPI), etc.
From 2011 up to 2014, he was Principal Research Statistician in charge of Price statistics. He oversaw the production of economic statistics indicators, such as Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and Producer Price Indices (PPI).
From August 2006 up to 2010, he was Statistician in charge of other prices, excluding the Consumer Price Index. He was involved in activities of Producer Price Index (PPI), ranging from data collection, analysis, compilation and its publication.
SIBOMANA holds a master’s degree in economics from the Annamalai university, India and he also holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Rwanda.
He has a vast experience in statistics compilation; this allowed him to occupy various positions at NISR; namely positions of statistician, senior statistician, acting director of economic statistic unit.
